Daily report books, 1883-1936 (bulk 1883-1888, 1919-1936).

These books document daily inventories of the prisoners by the areas of confinement or work assignment. Included are totals by walk numbers and cell numbers; prisoner totals by gender, race, and length of sentence;names and sentences of prisoners in hospital; and names of prisoners received and discharged. By 1919, the format of these daily reports changed to include prisoner totals by work assignment.

Legislation establishing a penal system in Kentucky was passed in 1798, and by 1800, the first prison west of the Allegheny Mountains, the Kentucky State Penitentiary, was completed on a one-acre tract of land in Frankfort.
